Dental alloys are not pure 24 carat gold, because pure gold is too soft to survive years of chewing. Instead, dentists use a blend, and that blend is what makes dental gold complicated to value correctly. We buy every type.
Two mistakes we see constantly. The first is assuming a white or silver-coloured crown is worthless because it is not yellow. Many white alloys are high in palladium and platinum, which can be worth as much per gram as gold. The second is assuming a PFM crown has no value because it looks like a natural tooth. The metal substructure underneath the porcelain is frequently a dental scrap gold alloy worth testing.
Do not try to chip the porcelain off yourself. You risk losing small gold fragments or cutting yourself, and we separate it properly during assay anyway.

Your payout comes from three inputs: the net weight of precious metal, its assayed purity, and the live gold price on the day.
Dental scrap almost always arrives with something attached, tooth, cement, resin or porcelain. We weigh the whole item, then calculate the weight of the non-metal material and deduct it. What is left is the net weight of the actual alloy, and that is what you get paid on. This is called tare weight, and it is the reason two crowns of similar size can be valued so differently.
A typical crown weighs 2 to 3 grams in total, and gold content commonly sits between 40 and 70 per cent, roughly 10 to 17 carats. Higher-noble dental alloys can reach up to 90 per cent precious metal. See current rates on our Price Lists page.
Old-school acid testing is too imprecise for a dental alloy that might contain gold, palladium, platinum and silver at once. We screen every item using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), which reads the atomic signature of the metal in seconds and shows the exact percentage of each element on screen. Where a more precise reading is needed, we confirm the result with fire assay, the traditional laboratory method for measuring exact precious metal content.
